I do what I can to help

"My dad worked three jobs to support us, to put food on the table. We had to stretch our food. He was too proud to go to the Food Bank. I look at it now, and isn’t pride one of the deadly sins? When you need it, you need it, to help your family.

I think poverty is a big thing. Even in Tucson, even now. A lot of people don’t have the resources to get to the Food Bank or are too proud to ask someone. I always had enough money to buy food, but there was one week when things were real tight because my car broke down and I needed to pay rent. So I had to go to the church to get food for a week.

Now that I'm retired, I do what I can to help.

And I feel better inside. That’s gratitude. Now I pay it forward. It’s just something that I want to do to better myself and help someone else."
