The Marana Community Food Bank’s Special Christmas Stocking Story

Donors and volunteers of the Marana Community Food Bank really wanted to help make Christmas special for a group of children who live in Marana.

In October a frequent donor offered to make an additional donation if it would be used for children. All involved came up with the idea of producing a special Christmas stocking for children.  It was determined that there are 1,000 children who are ten years old and under whose parents are regular clients of the Marana Food Bank.  Christine Noriega, Marana Community Food Bank Advisory Board member is also the Family Resource and Wellness Coordinator for the Marana Unified School District.  She advised the food bank on nutritious snacks the children would enjoy receiving.

Many hands went into producing these special Christmas stockings.  Daisy Girl Scout Troop #320 and Troop #1287 helped with a food drive.  The Southern Region of the National Bank of Arizona adopted the project and donated more than 1,000 juice packets and hundreds of animal cracker packages.  Fry’s Food Store #18 at 1st and Oracle organized an assembly line at the Marana Geasa Library and on Saturday, November 20th, more than a dozen volunteers packed the stockings which were handed out before the Christmas holiday.

A special “thank you” goes out to every one of Santa’s helpers who came together and provided a little something special for the children of the Marana Community Food Bank.

Actively Curbing Obesity at the Community Food Bank’s El Pueblo Farmers’ Market

There are no better reasons to work on those New Year’s resolutions to become healthier in 2011 than the Pima County obesity rate (21%) and obesity related illnesses such as diabetes (8%) ( ) which are both profoundly affecting our communities.  The Community Food Bank’s El Pueblo Farmers’ Market offers healthy eating options on a year round basis, but on January 22nd it will also provide opportunities to exercise with fun-filled and family friendly activities.

On January 22nd the El Pueblo Farmers’ Market is partnering with PE Partners, a student group, from Desert View High School to provide a rock climbing wall, birdie golf, apple tasting demonstrations and other children oriented games. El Rio Community Health Center staff will also help Farmers’ Market shoppers with jump ropes and stretching exercises while enjoying live music. San Miguel High School Cheerleading Squad will be kicking off this fitness centered event with some of their competition routines.

All of the Community Food Bank farmers’ markets accept SNAP (food stamps), WIC checks, Arizona Farmers Market Nutrition vouchers, cash, credit and debit.  El Pueblo Farmers’ Market runs every Saturday from 9 AM – 12 PM in the El Pueblo Adult Learning Center Parking lot, on the SW Corner of Irvington Road and South 6th Ave.

The El Pueblo Farmers’ Market is part of the Communities Putting Prevention to Work (CPPW) initiative to prevent or reduce obesity through increased opportunities for improved nutrition and physical activity. Led by the Pima County Health Department, CPPW is funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

At the Youth Farm Project, young people are given the opportunity to develop a relationship with the food they eat and to consider how what they eat affects their health, community, and the planet. The Youth Farm Project, housed at the Marana Heritage Farm, hires Apprentices ages 14-18 to work on the farm, learn about food systems, contribute to the community, and of course have fun!

About the farm:

The Marana Heritage Farm, a 10-acre no-spray vegetable farm, is a project of The Community Food Bank’s Community Food Resource Center (CFRC). Now in our third growing season, we are dedicated to producing fresh, organically grown food, while fulfilling the CFRC’s vision of “improving community food security for the people of Pima County by promoting, demonstrating, advocating for and collaboratively building an equitable and regional food system, which supports food production and strengthens communities.”

Who will be hired for the program?

• Youth ages 14-18 who express interest in learning about farming and food systems.

• Youth who work well with others and demonstrate strong motivation and work ethic.

What is the purpose of the program?

• To engage local youth in growing food for their community while addressing issues of nutritional poverty and hunger.

• To encourage nutrition and healthy food choices.

• To empower program participants to become voices and advocates within the food system.

• To introduce sustainable farming as a viable career option.

• To participate in daily farm activities and chores that support the Marana Heritage Farm.

• To bring together a diverse community of youth, to interact with the land in a positive way and to have fun!
