What’s New:

For more than two months every year, schools close their doors for summer vacation. As a result millions of children who depend on school meals to meet a substantial amount of their daily nutrient needs lack access to school nutrition programs. This lack of access to basic nutrition is most pronounced among the nation’s poorest children, who frequently have no alternative to school meals.

The Amado and Ajo branches of the Community Food Bank are working as a team to meet these needs in Pima County. It is estimated we will feed approximately 45,000-plus meals over the 8 week summer vacation this year, an increase from previous summers of 150%. For 2006 two additional feeding sites have been added, and breakfast programs have been added at four of the existing sites.
Our program ensures that children can receive nutritious midday meals on school playgrounds and in parks, camps, and other sites where they traditionally gather during the summer months.

Scenes like this happen all across our county, our state and our country—a country recognized as one of the richest in the world. If each of us could work in some small way to stop hunger, we as a nationwide team could help each child grow up to be a happy, healthy and productive adult.
