Join Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona, Feeding America and many other Anti-Hunger organizations and allies in a September 17th National Call In Day to Congress to support and protect SNAP using Feeding America’s toll-free number 866-456-8824.

Next week we expect the House to bring up the “Nutrition Bill,” which would cut $40 billion from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) over the next 10 years.  This is on top of the impending benefit reductions that will impact all SNAP participants beginning November 2013.  If passed, the bill would result in about 1.5 billion lost meals for hungry families every year for the next 10 years.  The combined cuts would lead to more lost meals than the entire Feeding America network distributes in a year. While we are grateful the bill also includes additional resources for TEFAP, the increased funding will not come close to helping hungry families replace the meals lost due to the SNAP cuts.  We can’t let that happen.

  • Call our toll-free hotline at 866-456-8824.
  • Listen to the pre-recorded message and enter your zip code when prompted.
  • State that you are a constituent and give your name and the town you are calling from.
  • Let them know you are calling about anti-hunger programs and deliver this important message:As your constituent and supporter of my local food bank, I am asking you to vote against the House Farm Bill proposal to cut $40 billion from SNAP.  This bill will be devastating to struggling Americans and the food banks that support them.  I understand the need to reduce the deficit, but increasing hunger is not the way to do it.  Please oppose this bill.

Help us send a message to Congress by joining our National Call In Day on September 17th to urge the House to vote against this harmful bill.  We hope you’ll join us by calling your Representative and mobilizing your local supporters.

Community Food Bank SNAP Challenge 2013

September 3 through September 6, 2013

The Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona will sponsor a SNAP Challenge September 3 through September 6, 2013 during which participants will challenge themselves to live on a budget of $4.00 per day or $16.00 for a four days period.  $4.00 per person per day is the average amount of SNAP benefits received by those participating in the program.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as Food Stamps helps over a million Arizona households put food on the table.

While this experience cannot give participants a true sense of living in deep or prolonged poverty, it can provide insight into some of the challenges families confront while trying to live on SNAP benefits.

“By participating in the SNAP Challenge we can better understand the difficulties faced every day by thousands of Arizonans who rely on this program to feed their families,” stated Bill Carnegie, President/CEO of the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona.

Go online to www.cfbsnapchallenge.org, to register, receive more information and share your experiences with others.  The Snap Challenge is part of Hunger Action Month and elected officials, journalists, Food Bank board members, staff, volunteers, non-profits and community members are invited to participate.

How can I participate in the SNAP Challenge?

  1. Register for the 2013 SNAP Challenge online here. Then check your e-mail for blogging information and resources to help you budget your week and stretch your food dollar!
  2. Purchase food and beverages using your SNAP Challenge budget during the week of September 3-9, 2013. See SNAP Food Guidelines for purchasing foods. We also encourage participants to try to maintain a healthy diet. Please see  MyPlate on a SNAP budget link for nutritional guidelines.
  3. Record spending. All food purchased and eaten during the Experience, including food not permitted to be purchased with your benefit and dining out, must be included in the total spending.
  4. Eat only food you purchase for the project:
    • Avoid consuming food that you already own (this does not include spices or condiments).
    • Avoid accepting free food from family, friends, or at work or social gatherings.
  5. Contribute to the blog by submitting entries online or sending entries to hbutrum@communityfoodbank.org.  See the Blog Prompts for ideas on how you can contribute. We love photos!
  6. Spread the word about your experience and post pictures on your Twitter and Facebook accounts! For twitter, tag @foodbanktucson #HungerAction in your tweets.

The Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona and it’s four branch food banks in Amado, Green Valley-Sahuarita, Marana and Nogales are asking all communities in Southern Arizona to join the activities of “Hunger Action Month 2013” during September.

Hunger Action Month is an opportunity to join a movement to raise awareness about the issue of hunger in Arizona.  There will be opportunities for individuals to advocate, donate or volunteer.

During “Hunger Action Month” the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona will feature a local “30 Ways in 30 Days” calendar on its Website to inform people about opportunities to participate in their community.  To find out how the public can get involved, go to www.communityfoodbank.org/ham.  One event or suggestion on how to help will be highlighted each day.

September 18th: Free Screening: “A Place at the Table”  Join us at the Marriott on September 18 at 7:00 pm for a viewing of the the film. Free and open and to the public.

September 28th: Hunger Walk 2013  Walk to fight hunger at Community Food Banks in Tucson, Amado, Green Valley, Marana and Nogales. Register early!

ENTRIES WANTED: 2014 CALENDAR CONTEST FOR KIDS!

Draw a Picture & Help Families Struggling with Hunger!

Every year we publish a calendar of artwork created by local children.
This calendar will be mailed to homes in Pima County and beyond. Every year your drawings help raise funds for meals to feed hungry families, seniors and children during the winter months.

We need your help!

Have your class draw pictures for us and one of them could win a place in our calendar. Drawings should be about nutrition, hunger or the importance of food in our lives. Students also can write an explanatory sentence on the back of their pictures.

Winning artwork will be printed in the 2014 calendar; each winning artist will receive a special certificate with his or her name and a ten dollar gift card to Target stores! The winners will be announced this fall.

Submit Your Calendar Entries by October 1st!

How to participate:

  • All entries from your class should be mailed in one envelope. Individual entries should be mailed in one envelope as well.
  • Students should write their full name, age, and grade on the back of their drawing.
  • All entries must be received on or before October 1, 2013 to be eligible.
  • Include the name of your school or organization, subject of your class, and your full name with your entry.
  • Please have your students create their art in ANY 2-D medium. Examples: colored pencil, marker, crayons, paint, watercolor, paper cut-outs, collage, etc. The more colorful, the better! Just make sure they are on unlined, 8.5” x 11” paper and in a horizontal (landscape) orientation.
  • HAVE FUN!

One in four children in Arizona do not know where their next meal is coming from. Your support in the Hunger Walk can help feed families, seniors and children in your community. Individuals and teams consisting of family, friends, co-workers and members of many other organizations all across southern Arizona, come together on one day to walk and make a difference in the fight against hunger. Donations will benefit the local area you walk in! Thank you so much.

Community Food Bank is Providing Warehouse & Truck Driving Support to Help with the Ongoing Tornado Relief Efforts

The Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona’s George Fahrman is in Oklahoma to help the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma with tornado relief duties.  Fahrman, Food Bank Transportation Coordinator and CDL driver began work on May 29th in the Moore, Oklahoma area.

Feeding America, a network of member food banks, sent out an appeal for help for the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma and their relief efforts following the devastating tornado on May 20, 2013.  They had equipment and food supplies, but lacked truck drivers.  Bill Carnegie, Community Food Bank CEO asked for volunteers from the staff to assist in Oklahoma and George Fahrman stepped forward.

Fahrman’s current duties involve driving semi-truck loads of food and water from the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma to a food bank, local churches and other distribution points in Moore.

The Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona has as history of helping in times of disaster.  The Community Food Bank assisted with disaster relief efforts by supplying staff and equipment during Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and Hurricane Ike in 2008.

National Association of Letter Carriers “Stamp Out Hunger” Food Drive

For the 21st consecutive year the National Association of Letter Carriers and the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona will team up to collect donations on Saturday, May 11, 2013 for the annual “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive.  This is Southern Arizona’s largest single day food drive.

“The 2013 Letter Carriers Food Drive is more important than ever,” said Bill Carnegie, Community Food Bank President/CEO.  “Our food donations are down this year and we need our community to step forward and make this year’s food drive an enormous success.”

To help “Stamp Out Hunger” in Southern Arizona, residents are asked leave a bag of non-perishable food, such as canned meats, canned vegetables, canned soups, cereal, peanut butter, canned fruit or canned tomato products next to their mail box before the time of their mail delivery on Saturday, May 11th.   Food should be in non-breakable containers.  Letter carriers and volunteers will collect the food donations and forward them to the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE:

  1. Collect & bag non-perishable food items*. (See our Most Need Items)
  2. Place by mailbox for your letter carrier to deliver to your local food bank.

Monetary donations will be accepted for the “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive and on-line donations may be made as well:

for National Association of Letter Carriers “Stamp Out Hunger” Food Drive

The National Association of Letter Carriers and the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona are teaming up for the 21st Annual “Stamp Out Hunger” Food Drive on Saturday, May 11, 2013.  This is Southern Arizona’s largest single day food drive and volunteers are needed to help unload the food at post offices throughout Tucson.

The largest food drive demands an equally large volunteer force. We need volunteers to help us unload the trucks full of food when they arrive at the post office on Saturday, May 11th from 12-6 p.m. Groups and individuals welcome. Sort food at our main warehouse after the Letter Carrier Food Drive. Especially weekdays from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Sam Levitz Furniture to Present $20,000 Check to Community Food Bank

Sam R. Levitz, President of Sam Levitz Furniture will present Bill Carnegie, Community Food Bank CEO with a check for $20,000 on Thursday, April 11th at 10:30 AM.  The presentation will take place at the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona, 3003 S. Country Club Road in the Food Plus area.

The donation is from the Sam Levitz Furniture 60th Anniversary Celebration that was recently completed.  A portion of every sale, during this campaign, was donated to help feed hungry families in our community.  This $20,000 will enable the Community Food Bank to distribute $180,000 worth of food.

“This donation from Sam Levitz Furniture could not have come at a better time for the Food Bank,” commented, Carnegie.  “Our donations are down this year and this check will help close that gap.  We deeply appreciate Levitz’ generosity.”

Sam Levitz Furniture is a family owned and operated business founded in 1953 with three Sam Levitz locations, a Sam’s Furniture Outlet and an Ashley Home Store in the Tucson area.

Following the check presentation, there will be opportunities for interviews and photographs.
