Volunteering at the Marana Heritage Farm
There are a variety of volunteer positions at the Marana Heritage Farm. Everyone is welcome. The different volunteer positions, with the information you will need to know in order to do the job are listed here:
Plant Maintenance
- know the difference between weeds and crops
- be aware of the varieties of weeds in field and which are hazardous and which are useful.
- weed row crops and perimeters using hoes, weed wacker, and shovel for big weeds
- maintain weed wacker, sharpen tools, inform staff when tools need repairs, gas, etc.
- dig out Bermuda grass.
Compost and Tractor Maintenance
- turn compost with tractor weekly
- water compost piles by building an overhead watering system
- record temperature of piles
- inform staff when piles are ready for use.
- transport compost to Tucson Food Bank for home gardening program
- maintain gas, oil, air filter, grease points on tractor
- keep field mowed
- maintain relationship with Reid Park Zoo which makes tri-monthly deliveries of manure
Seed Saver
- build seed cages for plants which we will harvest seed from
- establish relationship with Native Seed SEARCH
- choose varieties of seed which are drought and heat tolerant; plant in greenhouse/field
- harvest, clean, and package up seed for home gardening program and farm use
Creative Mind Maintenance
- build various types of gadgets, carts, systems, tables, etc. which we need at the farm
- be in contact with manager to find out what we need built
- fix plumbing leaks
- knowledge of carpentry, electricity, plumbing
Orchard, Vineyard, and Food Forest Upkeep (3 positions)
- prune and weed fruit trees and grapevines
- fix leaks in irrigation
- make sure trees are getting enough water
- keep tabs on the health of trees/vines
Marketing
- advertise for our Monday market in Marana/Tucson newspapers, websites, places around town
- make signs to put up on Monday night for people driving by
- make food samples and recipes available at market; look into the health permits required to do this
Greenhouse Maintenance
- water greenhouse twice a day in summer, once in winter
- water herb boxes
- plant in trays for beginning of summer and winter season; be in touch with the field plan which the manager creates
- bleach trays when they are empty
- keep greenhouse in order
- repair tears/holes in plastic
- weed
- buy soil ingredients; mix soil for trays
- set mouse traps, empty mouse traps
On Call Tour Guide/Greeter
- be able to explain the workings of the Marana Heritage Farm to groups that come to the farm
- welcome and instruct volunteers as they arrive at the farm
- answer phone\explain farm to callers
- organize/clean office
Waterharvesting
- set up cisterns around farm to collect water
- dig swales and basins
